明治３４年から８年間小諸教育に情熱を傾注された「佐藤寅太郎校長」は、教育精神の基盤に「梅花」を位置づけた。梅の花はいかなる冬の厳しさにも堪えて、春一番に万物に先駆けて咲く気品の高い花であり、学問を愛する意味を持つ花として、小諸教育の中核に据えられ、以後一貫した人格教育の基本理念として引き継がれている
